Today, Yusuke and I traveled to the town of Braunshweig which is known for its old architecture and many churches. We basically just walked all around the town, looking at the different buildings. On one of our first stops, we saw the St. Martin Church. This was the only church we also went into and it was very beautiful. After seeing some people come down a spiral staircase, we decided to go up and explore…and we found ourselves in what looked like the church attic. There were people waiting to climb up a rickety latter to go to another level. However, we decided not to wait in line. There was also a plank walk (VERY rickety) that lead you across the top of the churches arched ceiling, and ending at a dead end. It was dark, dirty, and full of cobwebs, so we quickly turned around and headed out across the planks. It was neat to see some of the old architecture behind the painted ceiling.
Other places we saw include the Old City Market, Castle Square, and Col Market. Some other buildings include the St. Andreas Church (Mostly destroyed in WWII and has been renovated, enter last phase in 2007), Rizzi House (An office building designed by James Rizzi in 2007), Alte Waage (The city’s finest half-timbered house), and the Old Town Hall, just to name a few. While we were walking, I had to snack on one of my favorite snacks….French fries with ketchup AND mayonnaise. Yes, that’s how Germans do it...and I like it (nothing like making something unhealthy, even more unhealthy)!
We ended our day at the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum…which is the oldest public museum in Germany. It is a very nice art museum with a variety of paintings, sculpture, ethnic art, and much more. Probably one of the most exciting times of the day was walking back to the train station and cutting through the Viewegs Garden. It was a nice public park and the trees were beautiful with fall colors.
Overall, Braunschweig was a very nice city to visit. Per usual, for most of the cities we have visited, I feel like we barely skimmed the surface of things to see. Either way, it was still a good day!
