Moordorf - A Weekend With Lisa!

This past weekend was invited to travel with Lisa to her house in Moordor and visit her family. She said there was not much to do around her town, but there was actually a lot to see and we had a great time! Her family is from Russian and her parents only speak Russian and German. Her and her brother and can speak English also very well.
On Friday night we arrive a little past nine at the Marienhafe Bahnhof. This is another small town near where she lives. The ride took about four hours and twenty minutes and it went by very quickly. Her parents picked us up (my third time in a car over here!) and we went directly to their home. Once there, I met her brother, Oleg, and Lisa and I ate dinner. It was a Russian soup called Borsch. It was very tasty with vegetables and meat in a tomato based liquid (I think). The rest of the evening we sat with her parents and talked. It was very stressful for Lisa to translate the whole time (as her brother went out with friends) but she did a great job. The parents spoke to me a little in German and I could understand a little bit, but it was easier for Lisa to translate when they just spoke Russian. Either way, it was fun to listen to them talk, and learn about what they do!

Saturday morning, Oleg, Lisa, and I traveled to the North Sea via Nordhafen, a small town on the Sea. Apparently this is a popular place for visitors in the summer. It was very windy and cold, like my last time on the Nordsee in Bremerhafen. There was a unique rock path that went out into the ocean, and we decided it was a good idea to walk out further, however, we were unaware that the rocks got bigger and more difficult to walk on further out. Fortunately we made it to the tip without any injuries. The view was not much different from on the shore, but it was a good adventure either way! On the way back, Oleg did have a run in with some mud on his shoe…but that was easily washed off! We also collected some of the many shells we saw along the rocks.

Afterwards, we drove around drove a church was holds the Guinness World Record for having a tower with the biggest tilt…like the leaning tower of Pisa. We found a church and walked around it, thinking it was the Guinness Record church…however, after driving in the car again for five minutes, we came across the REAL church! This made us laugh as we thought we had already seen it (We even recalled saying, “Yeah, it does look like it is tilting”). So, we then walked around the real world record church.

We then made it back to their home and had another wonderful meal from Russian. It consisted of Pelemeni (ground meat in pasta) and fresh vegetables. Again, delicious! That evening, Oleg’s friend joined us as we traveled to a Russian disco. Unfortunately there were not many people there so we went to a second disco called the Galaxy. It was great with two dance floors and many people.

On Sunday, Oleg took me to see a modern wind mill that produces the most energy in all of Germany. It is about 150 meters tall and one blade is about 60 meters long. When we got back we had our last meal together…red beat salad, sauerkraut on mashed potatoes, assorted meats, and a spinach sauce on pasta. We were in a hurry, but we still had time for dessert and tea, which we also had after lunch and dinner the previous day! I really enjoyed this part of the meal as it was more time to relax with the family.

The weekend definitely went by too fast, and I am sad it is over. It was great to meet Lisa’s family. They were wonderful hosts and really made me feel at home. I think her mom really liked the flowers as yellow was her favorite color (color of the largest accent ball) and daffodils are one of her favorite flower! I did not know this, but it worked out perfectly!

Now it is back to school and preparing for exams! I hope everyone has a wonderful week!
