On Saturday we traveled to a German Flea Market..aka a Flohmarkt! We did this over the Christmas holiday and it was a lot of fun….so we decided to do it again! This time there were several more vendors, thus so much more to see. The Flohmarkt seems to be a fairly big event and there are many types of booths…ranging from antique, to clothing, and even food!
Later in the day we traveled by train to a nearby town called Hildesheim. With no specific plans upon arrival, we walked straight to the market center to find the tourist information center. Here they informed us of a few key things to see while in Hildesheim. The city was very similar to others I’ve seen…with many shops, a fun city center, and many half-timbered buildings.
After looking around the market center, we made our way to the Dome Church or Cathedral of Hildesheim. This church is most well known for having a rose bush that is over 1000 years old! It was located within a courtyard and was growing up the side of the church, probably reaching over 2 stories high! It was cool to see covered in the rose fruits…but I can only imagine how beautiful it is covered in roses!
After the Cathedral we made our way to the St. Michaels Church which was built between 1001 and 1031. It was destroyed during World War II but reconstruction began in 1950.
We ended our time in Hildesheim with a drink at a local pub.
