Well...my last Paris post left off with informing you about our second day in Paris...spent at Versailles. On Monday we spent the day exploring Paris more. We met infront of Notre Dame. It's architecutre was amazing and the inside was beautiful! I was also very excited to see a big cluster of daffodils blooming outside the cathedral!
Then we took a walk down to the Jardin du Luxembourg and then checked out the St. Germain church...which I believe is the oldest church in Paris. At this point we had grabbed some paninis for lunch and enjoyed them on a bench outside the church. After strolling along Rue Jacob (a street known for antique shops....but we did not see many, which could be a good thing!) we headed up to the St. Merri cathedral. Behind this church was a fountain with several NIKI art pieces. This made me very excited to see as pieces were on display at MOBOT this past summer, and I also saw some in Hannover!
During our walk we saw many cool buildings, museums, and other architecture, including: the Neuf Bridge, Les Halles mall, Centre National d'Art et de Culture, and much more!
We ended our day at Montmarte, resting on the steps of the Basillique du Sacre Coeur and watching the sun set over paris. It was beautiful and a great way to relax and end the day! We had fun exploring the many gift shops around this area, and checking out the original art being sold in a small square. We had dinner, eating outside overlooking this square, and watched people get self portraits made! That evening we walked around the risky street where the Moulin Rouge is located, and then we parted ways.
After heading back to the hostel, I met a guy from Brazil and we headed out for a bit to find a bar. We ended up having a drink at a cafe across from Notre Dame and then a beer at a fun little bar. It was fun meeting him and seeing a little bit of the Paris night life!
The next day Sarah and I were planning on meeting at the Louvre, however it is actually closed on Tuesdays! So instead we walked through the Jardin des Tuileries and checked out the Place de la Condorde. This is a very famous location as many people (kings/queens/etc) lost their heads there! We then continued our walk and checked out Montaigne Avenue which is famous for the very expensive and high-end stores located there...it was fun window shopping! We finally made it to the Arc de Triomphe and rested under it...and it's amazing architecture!
After enjoying the Arc, we headed back to the apartment of Sarah's host family and got some last minute things taken care of before heading to Rome. Around 5:00 we left the apartment, and after many hours of travel (metro, bus, walking, standing in line, pushing way through crowded line, flight, car) we found ourselves in Ciampiano, a small town right outside of Rome! We were also happy to find very nice conditions at the hostel, and a comfortable bed, where we got a good nights sleep to prepare us for the next couple days!
